Making money by using Facebook?

I recently read the article titled, “Disruptions: Facebook Users Ask, ‘Where’s Our Cut?’ “, on the Yahoo home page.  It explains that some Facebook users believe that they should see some of the money that is generated from the website.  It states that Facebook’s annual revenue is around $4 billion.  This article is explaining how people think they are getting used and seeing nothing when it comes to making money off the website.

I completely disagree with the opinion shown in this article.  I am in no way, shape, or form against making money whenever you can.  Having said that, I do not believe that this is one of the places where people should make money.  I have 3 major reasons for my opinion.

The first reason is that Mark Zuckerberg came up with this idea (often argued), and should reap the benefits from the website.  I know if I was clever enough to come up with something of this nature, I would be shocked if people were trying to take some of this away from me.

Secondly, no one is making any of us use Facebook!!  Facebook has become very popular over the last few years because it provides an efficient way to connect and interact with different people all over the world!  Mark Zuckerberg is not creating your profile and signing us up for the service he provided.  If people disagree with how the money side of this works they can simply delete their account, which a majority of people won’t do.

Lastly, Zuckerberg is not charging people to use Facebook.  He is providing a free service to the general public and generates most of the profit from advertising that is done on this social network.  I think instead of trying to squeeze money out of the guy, people should be thanking him for making a service that nearly 845 million users each year.

Any thoughts?  Feel free to comment!

  1. Making money by using Facebook? I think you nailed it on the head here. People are just greedy, always wanting something for nothing. Just like you said Mark came up with this idea, he does’nt charge us for it, we have the choice to participate or not. If your upset about how well someone else is doing financially, then you probably need to start focusing on yourself, that could be the problem.
